Overbooked: Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday

July 2, 2019

“It’s a temptation that exists for everyone—for talk and hype to replace action.”

Why I chose this book:

One of my friends had this book and recommended it so I stole it and read it. This was also a great time to read this as I was in the mindset of removing ego that’s associated with my work.

Summary:

Ego is the center of unhappiness. When you feed into your ego, you feed into greed and desire. Both are bottomless and require validation. Holiday often refers to the history of ego, both when it has been managed and when it has not. How it can turn on your and how it can be used for your benefit.

Takeaways:

  • If you have an ego you will lose

  • Make other people look good and you will do well

  • When others treat you poorly, it only subdues them

Conclusion:

Holiday has an interesting take on Ego that is incredibly negative. I think you have to take the good with the bad. It’s okay to celebrate wins and want to be more and do more, that’s what life is all about. I took away that Holiday referred to wanting as feeding your ego and I don’t agree with that.

Recommended for:

This book good for people that are in the lowest lows or the highest highs.
